Formerly held the following positions
Prof. P. Srinivasa Rao obtained his B.Tech. (Hons.) and M.Tech. degrees in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. He stood All India FIRST in the Indian Services Examination conducted by UPSC in 1957 but preferred to pursue teaching and research as his career. He went to the then West-Germany in 1959 with the German Government Scholarship (DAAD) and obtained his Dr.-Ing. Degree from the Technical University of Munich in 1965.
He joined the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras in 1965 and served the Institute for more than 30 years, including 25 years as Professor of Structural Engineering. During his distinguished tenure, he held several important academic and administrative positions and made significant contributions to teaching, research, and institutional development. He retired from IIT Madras in 1997.
A distinguished teacher and researcher in Structural Engineering, Prof. Rao guided 19 Ph.D. scholars and contributed extensively to the advancement of structural engineering research and practice. His work encompassed the design of prestressed concrete railway sleepers, reinforced concrete television towers, chimneys, cooling towers, and other complex structures.
He also served on several committees of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) involved in the formulation of standards and codes of practice for concrete and steel structures.
Prof. Rao has made outstanding contributions as a structural engineering consultant to several public- and private-sector organisations, including Indian Railways, Doordarshan, All India Radio, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, Visakhapatnam Port Trust, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), and NTPC.
His consultancy work includes the design of major structures, notably tall reinforced concrete television towers across India. His work on the 330m tall television tower at Bhuj, which withstood the 2001 earthquake, stands as a notable example of the practical significance of his engineering expertise.
Prof. Rao served as Principal of GVP College of Engineering, Visakhapatnam, from 1997 to 2005, and as Director of the Indo-German Institute of Advanced Technology (IGIAT) from 2005 to 2007. He has played a significant role in the development of Gayatri Vidya Parishad and continues to be associated with its educational initiatives.
